Medieval Times

Day 4-September 11, 2010: We woke up too late again...this time just because of poor planning. We were starting to realize at this point that we were going to be two or three hours behind the whole trip. We rushed to the train station but it was too late so we had to catch the 10:00. There was a train switch in Faligna. I'm pretty sure that we missed a train because the one we caught was two hours later... we really appreciated the guy who "helped" us find the "right" train. We finally arrived in Perugia and caught a taxi to our hotel. The only way to really get to Assisi from Perugia was by taxi. They had agreed to 45 euros over the phone but when our taxi driver arrived his eyes turned into saucers when we gave him the price. He proceeded to put the pedal to the metal for the remainder of the drive. He was laughing at us every time he checked his rear view mirror and saw the slight terror on my face as he weaved in and out of traffic. Surprisingly, we arrived all in one piece in the very charming medieval town of Assisi.

The Basilica was beautiful and had beautiful arching crossbeams in the ceiling. We ook the Rick Steve's Walk through the town and saw St. Stefano's which is a small chapel, the Temple of Minera, several gorgeous views, St. Clara's Basilica, St. Rufus' Cathedral and then Nathan insisted on seeing the castle. We walked up a very steep winding stair case to the top of a tower that had a gorgeous view over the valley.

Back in Perugia, we ate at a small restaurant our cab driver recommended. The food was pretty tasty and we decided to take a stroll by our hotel in search of crepes but to no avail. Back at our 5 star, beautiful, hotel, the Brufani Palace, we enjoyed the luxurious bath tub and gorgeous view from our room.
